Subject : Building a laminated dashboard

Darryl,
I am going to build a replacement dashboard. The dashboard is 5"x65"x5/8" and has curved ends. The finished dashboard will be covered in zebra wood veneer.

The original dashboard is a laminated construction - 12 pieces of cross banded veneer. My questions are -

1. If I utilize the same construction method, which species of veneer do
you recommend? The original dashboard is extremely rigid and I would
like to duplicate this quality.
2. Before I glue the laminates together, should I bind them together, soak
them in water, and let this laminate sandwich dry in the vacuum bag
while pressing against the form.
3. Is Unibond the correct glue for this application?
4. When the glued-up laminate sandwich is removed from the bag, will the
curved ends remain true to the shape of the form or will I have to
compensate for springback?

Thank you for your help.
Peter

Peter,

Its not super important what veneer you use but I might go with poplar. Not a heavy grain pattern and is somewhat compressible. I think you will not have a spring back problem cosidering you are using quite a few lamination and they are all just veneer thicknes. Unibond or any urea resin glue would be the right choice for this application.
