Subject : Substrate for Flat Veneered Table Apron
Posted : 2004-05-07 11:48 AM
Post #31509

The mahogany crotch sofa table tops turned out extremely well. Now for one of them I would like to veneer the four aprons. I prefer to join the aprons to the table legs with mortise and tenon. Solid wood would be the best material for the joint, but the veneer then would have to be two ply. Baltic birch plywood would be an alternative, but the tenons would not be as strong laterally. Loose tenons would be as strong as hardwood, but the thin sides of the apron mortises would then be the weak link. MDF is the smoothest substrate, but offers almost no joint strength. Any suggestions or experience report would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Actually I have veneered solid wood numerous times without using two ply. The times I've done it it was for narrow stock like table aprons and cabinet door stiles and rails. I used regular PVA glue and after several years have had no problems. Steve
