Subject : Radial 2 ply

I'm planning on doing a radial lay up on a round table. There will be hardwood edging, and I'd like to do a 2 ply on the top to fully conceal the joint between the MDF and the hardwood. My question-- how to set up a radial 2 ply? The easiest way would be to tape the radial lay up and glue it to a conventional linear taped lower layer. The purest way would be to do a second radial lay up for the lower layer, with each pie slice having grain oriented 90 degrees to the covering layer, but this seems like alot of work. Floow-up question-- what about balancing the veneer? Does a 2-ply on top require 2 backer layers on the underside? Thanks.

Jim,

I think you can make the backer veneer just go the normal way. What I wouldnt do is lay it up in a two ply. Better to lay down the backer veneer to the substrate and then put down your radial in a seperate lay up. A radial two ply would warp in strange ways that would end up being a royal pain to deal with.
