Subject : flat veneer slicing equiptment

Can anyone tell me how 'flat sliced 'veneer is made/sliced? Where can I look for the equiptment? Do I need to steam it prior to slicing? Any info would help. thanx will

Will,

Slicing veneer is done by very specialized equipment that is extremely expensive, like hundreds of thousands of dollars from what I understand. Logs are soaked in vats before slicing. The cutting knife which is the full length of the log (up to 16') is held stationary on a slight angle to the log while the log rides on a carriage that is brought down on the knife with great force, moving forward by 1/40th of an inch or so for every pass. Quite impressive to watch. If your serious about getting this kind of equipment you could check with Stiles Machinery, they should at least be able to send you in the right direction.
