I'm looking for information regarding the use of honeycomb substrates for veneer work, i.e. available thicknesses, ideal thickness of mdf layers between substrate and veneer, ideal (inner) edge treatments, glue application (using unibond 800), vacuum setting, sources and cost, and anything else that might be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Adam,

You can get honeycomb generally in three forms, aluminum, plastic and resin impregnated paper. Aluminum honeycomb is rarely used in furniture, plastic sometimes, with most woodworking applications using resin impregnated paper.

Your skin thickness is really up to you and apply the glue to the skin, dont use white or yellow glue for pressing the paper honyecomb. Edge strips have to match the honeycomb thickness and can be made of whatever you choose, I often use pine or poplar. You do need to turn the vacuum down to around 10-15HG to prevent deflection. Once its properly pressed you can then press at full vacuum to apply the veneer. Vacuum Pressing Systems sell the paper kind at 1/2, 3/4 & 1" thickness. I dont know where you else you can get it in small quanities.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
