I have a panel I veneered using quilted cherry & unibond800. I got a serious amount of bleed thru. I'm guessing that the glue just flowed thru the capillarys that are perpendicular to the face.
I just spent some time sanding with 80 grit paper & am not making much progress. I'm afraid of sanding thru. I cleaned the surface with naptha just to see what I could see. The glue is not apparent at that point.

Question: What do you suppose an alkyd varnish finish will look like?
Should I go for it or keep sanding?

Jeff,

I would do a water wipe down just to be sure there is no glue residue on the surface. Sometimes water will show things naptha will not as well as the other way around. If that looks good then whatever finish you use should be fine.

Definately back off on the glue. A closed grain wood like cherry should show no or almost no bleed through.

Sincerely
