Subject : veneering over solid edge banding

Darryl, I am preparing to veneer some makore veneer over MDF. I know that you prefer to edge band solid wood after veneering to offer some protection to the edge of the veneer. Since I don't have any solid makore laying around, I am planning on using mahogany edge banding. A good color match, but not quite right - so I've decided to edge band and then veneer over it and hope for the best.

The question is how thick can solid edge banding be without worrying about stressing the veneer as it will be going with the grain in some parts and against the grain in others? To best hide a previous error (now who made that!), a 1/4 " thick band would work best, but certainly less would not look bad.
Thanks for your time!

Jeff,

I recommend no more than 1/4" with 1/8" being my general choice. Whats more important is that you do not use white or yellow glue to apply it. Because this glue has cold creep it can push up on the veneer along the glue joint. Make sure you use a catalytic glue like urea resin, epoxy or polyurethane for this joint. These glue have no cold creep.

Sincerely
