I laid up some maple veneer and I'm having trouble with the areas where the veneer tape was applied remaining visible. I'll call them ghost.
The tape was solid white veneer tape, water activated. Uibond 800 glue. Bought both from VPS. After pressing I wet it and scraped it off. I then scraped and sanded the panel, random orbit as well as vibrator sanders. I was satisfied that all was well, but with the panel in the right light, you can see exactly where each piece of tape was. Put finish on it and they shine like new money. Completely unacceptable.
I went back and rewet a seam. Scrubbed it a bit and resnaded. Still there. Tried lacquer thinner. Still there. In frustration, I went to the back of a panel, or inside of a door, and started scraping to see just how far I could, and would need to go. As far as Im concerned, the ghost went through the veneer. As I approached the substrate the ghost were still there. Not good.
Grasping at straws, and thinking I had little to lose, I wondered if what I was seeing was a stain as opposed to glue residue. I use well water and it can react strangely at times. I tried some household bleach with scotch brite pad. Ghost gone.
But why...why...why????
Could it have been the well water reacting with the tape? The maple veneer? This ain't my first rodeo. I've laid a lot of veneer and only encountered this once before. This time has been costly.
I don't want have to bleach all my panels. It did alter the color of the maple, if only to warm it a bit. Still, I don't like the idea.
I have nothing but questions and need answers. I don't have time for this. I'd rather prevent a problem than solve it.
Sorry for the novella but I need some info.
