Subject : Double Thickness edge banding

I am working on a project that requires me to but a 2 1/4" edge band on a round table top and on a triangle table top with slightly rounded courners. For many reasons I have decided to edge band the veneer (which is black dyed Marfum) directly to my MDF substrate. I will be using the ironing method and wonder if it's possible to put a double thickness of veneer on to give it a little extra protection should it get nicked? If so, should I glue the edge band double thickness first then iron it on, or iron it on one thickness at a time? If the best answer seems to be glue the double thickness first, will I be able to coax the double edge band around the tight rounded corner of the triangle?

b bortz,

I dont think you will be able to iron on two layers with much success. Ironing on each layer individually will be problematic as the iron may be adhering one layer while loosening the previous. Trying to iron both layers on at once I doubt will be much better. Bonding both layers to each other ahead of time would work provided you use a glue that is not heat sensitive like urea resin or epoxy. The only problem with this solution is whether it will bend around your radiused corners as a double layer. That I cant say without seeing it.

Sincerely
