Subject : Making Two Ply Veneer

Read a post from 2000 on taping up a four way book matched burl veneer and vacuum pressing to a backer veneer, before pressing onto the substrate, as the burl is very persnickety and hard to handle. I'd like some input as to the technique and steps to follow. Unibond or other rigid adhesive would be the best choice for making the two ply? Apply just to the backer veneer? If the backer veneer is made up of several pieces, veneer tape one side of the backer, glue the other side to the burl, then remove the veneer tape and glue the two ply to the substrate? Would a rigid adhesive also be best for gluing the two ply to the substrate? (Another post pointed out that the other side of the substrate would ideally also receive a two ply veneer.) Thanks

Ron,

The question first is, are you talking about gluing each piece of individual burl to a backer, or are you wanting to glue the taped up face veneer pieces to the backer as a group. Either way, I would use a rigid glue between the face veneer and the backer. This is always the most important glue line. Whether you use the rigid glue between the two ply and the substrate is not as important. Also, you should put a two ply on the backside if you want a perfect balance, although it may not be necessary. That depends on the thickness of the panel and how it's going to be used. In general I don't two ply individual pieces of veneer if I can help it. I prefer to put them through the flattening process to stabilize them and only two ply the individual pieces if after flattening they're still too fragile to work with. As far as applying the glue I put it on the backer only. I tape the backer to the bench to help hold it in place while I roll the glue. Veneer tape would go on the backside, and then be removed before pressing the two ply to the substrate.

Sincerely.
