Subject : Yet another "veneer both sides?" question

Is veneering both sides ALWAYS needed? I'm doing a kitchen and need to veneer 4 inch strips to cover the lumber forming the toe kick. I'll attach them to the underlying 2 by stock with construction adhesive and brads. Veneer both sides? I'm also doing some panels to cover the back of cabinets forming an island. They'll be flat panels of 1/4 plywood veneered with standard thickness vertical grain fir, set into dados in 2 5/8" rails and stiles. The panels will probably be about 24 inched wide and 30 inched high. Again, do you recommend veneeering the unseen side? Many thanks, Daryl, for your helpful forum.

Jim,
Darryl is out of town for a while, but I can offer a response.
You don't say how thick the kick is, so I assume it's 3/4". You shouldn't have any trouble there, at least no more cup than you would experience with solid lumber.
As for the 1/4" panels, you might see a somewhat convex surface in the summer and a concave surface in the winter, but the rabbet (? groove?) should hold the panels just fine.
I'm not one for hard and fast rules. If you understand what the rules are for, you can decide when it's reasonable to break them.
Best,
Thomas Stender
