Used 3m blue tape to register paper-backed veneers on mdf cores, and the vacuum in the bag caused the tape to compress the veneers. Had to iron-up and/or work around these areas. Not much fun. Having success with scotch tape, and in multiple flat glue-ups, no tape, guiding the bag down with care. Take heed.

Appreciate you input on masking tape. I always tell folks to stay away from masking tape, even the low stick type. Due to its thickness it will leave an indentation like you mentioned and often can be next to impossible to remove. For registering my veneer to the panel I use the masking tape to hold my cover sheet to the core without getting it on the veneer. I find that if the cover sheet is held in place the veneer doesn't slip when loading the bag.
