If I am using 1/4" melamine for a caul but it isn't long enough, can I butt 2 pieces together to cover the work. I am wondering if there will be a line in the finished veneer where the two parts of the caul came together? If insignificant, then I don't have to custom cut a caul for each pressing job I do. Maybe I could use masking tape on the outside of the 2 pieces to insure the gap is minimized. I would appreciate your opinion.

Taping them together from the top (so the tape does not touch the veneer) helps for alignment.
