Dear Joe,In general what you are wanting to do is pretty balanced, but I will agree that the two species are not that close and the grain direction are obviously different. Will it make a difference? that's hard to say. One person could do this lay up and have it be fine while the next person would have trouble. This is the nature of working with wood. If you want to go the extra distance, lay up the front and back veneers on a mahogany backer veneer, making a two ply and then press those onto your door. This is about as good as you can get. Good luck.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I'm constructing some slab doors, app. 19x30, of 3/4" MDF. Redwood Burl fronts and Black Dyed Costelo (African Boxwood) : edging and on the opposite side of the door. The doors remaining flat is of great concern. Are the two species in question, : applied to different sides of the doors, going to provide enough balance to ensure the doors staying flat? If not, will a backer : glued to the redwood burl help? Would you reccomend a backer glued to the burl any way?( 4 way match on the door fronts) : If so, what species? Grain orientation with respect to backer and burl? I'll use Uni Bond 800 glue and plan a film forming : finish.........Thanks
