Dear Scott,Well, for being new to veneering you are choosing a fairly complicated project to begin with, but why not.The first thing you need to do is tape the short grain mahogany border to the Avodire crotchveneer so its all one piece. As far as the string inlay, it will be rather fussy work consideringit is so small. The traditional way would be to lay up the Avodire and mohagany veneer firstand then put in the string inlay using whats called "scratch inlay technique". This amounts tosharpening a small piece of metal, usually an short cut from an old band saw blade filed to thesame width as the inlay and use that to cut a groove at the joint between the two veneers. You would have to call me for a complete discription of how this is done, much to long of a explanation for this forum. My number is 207-725-0935The other way is to strip out little thin pieces of your holly inlay and tape them in when youattach the border veneer to the main piece. As far as pressing it, with a vacuum press you would just lay the leg down in the bag with thepart you want veneered facing up. Tape the veneer to the leg to hold it in place and tuck thebag down tight to the platen around the leg, at least past the point where the veneer ends.If you need to wet the veneer to get it to bend you can use regular white or yellow glue, apply it to the veneer instead of the leg and wet the face side very lightly. This should allowit to lay nicely to the leg. You can use polyurethane glue but the extra water in regular woodglue will help the veneer to bend when applied to the leg.Good luckSincerelyDarryl Keil: I am new to veneering and will soon purchase a vacupress system. I : need to veneer around the top portion of round tapered reeded legs on : a Federal Card table. The cylindrical portion I want to veneer is : only 4 inches wide but have two string inlay borders around the : Avodire crotch veneer I will use. The diameter of the leg is 2" and : the veneer will only cover the front half of the leg because it runs : into the table aprons. The veneer is very wavy but I will flatten it : first using your flattening method described in another letter. How : do I go about applying the veneer to these legs. Do I steam or heat : it first? I assume I have to tape the 1/16" bandings to the veneer : first. Also the Avodire is 1/ 28 " thick and the bandings and frame : veneers of Mahogany and Holly are 1/40" thick. I bought a rubber mat : (1/16) neoprene to use as a caul. Can I wet the veneer and use : polyurethane glue? Need help!!
