Dear Patricia,I recommend you replace the sub veneer before you apply the walnut face veneer. It is commonpractice to have a backer grade veneer running 90 degrees to the face veneer. Standardveneer construction has each layer running 90 degrees to the next one. This creates a stablepanel as each layer stablizes the expansion-contraction effect of the next.Although oak would not be my choice for a backer veneer, if thats what you have it wouldbe ok on a small piece like yours. I prefer backer grade mahogany, its nice and stable, and comes in wide widths.sincerelyDarryl Keil: I removed damaged walnut face veneer from the side of a deco bedside table, and discovered a second layer of : veneer-thickness wood running at 90 degrees to it. It was loose at the edges so I removed it also, but now I'm wondering if I : should have left it. What was its purpose? Do I need to replace it? Would any veneer do to replace it, and is it installed in the : same manner as face veneer? (I have some spare oak veneer I could use--would that work? Or do I need to buy something : special--and where?) Will the difference between the depth of the sides be noticeably different if I replace this side with only : face veneer but leave the other side two-ply? I don't want to remove the veneer from the other side if I don't have to. The : table isn't fine furniture, but I want it to look right.
