Dear Michael,There is no question that the finish could affect the contact cement bond and allow the veneerto come loose in spots. In general contact cement is not a good veneering glue because it does not have the rigidity and holding power to stop veneer from moving. Remember veneeris just extra thin solid wood which wants to move just like regular wood. Paper backed veneeris a bit better because of the backing as well as the veneer is a bit tenderized making it moreplyable than raw veneer. Look at it this way, contact cement is a flexible glue. If you pour out some contact cementon a piece of plastic and let it dry for a week, when you pick it up it will be a soft as a wetnoodle. If you do the same with a yellow glue it will be quite hard and may even snap. Becausecontact cement is flexible it works well under a rigid material like plastic laminate. The contactcement will hold it down and the plastic laminate has no inherent movement making the twoa good combination. Contact cement and veneer are both relatively flexible materials making them a poor match. Of course all of this is a matter of degrees but if you want the best bondalways put veneer over a hard glue rather than contact cement. As far as the iron technique, this method is best on smaller pieces as the extreme localized heat as you move the iron around can wreak havoc on the veneer. I am not familiar with theglues used in paper back so I would try a sample to see what happens. In the end the best way to veneer is with a press, either mechanical or vacuum. This will giveyou the best professional results.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I am using paper backed veneer on FDM, and was told that contact : cement would be ok to use. However, I have also been told that the : type of finish I use cold effect the cement. I am planning on using : Watco and then maybe some shellac for a gloss. What do you think, : will this be ok? Is it better to use yellow glue and an iron on : paper backed veneer? Will the heat of the iron affect the glue used : between the veneer wood and the paper backing?
