Dear Peter,1.No matter what the substrate is or what its thickness, if you want the panel not to warp veneer both sides. Although you usually press each layer of veneer perpendicular to the previous one, on a good grade plywood having the face veneer running the same direction as the one underneath is not a real problem.2.I like to use backer grade mahogany for my backer veneer. It comes nice and wide and is quite stable.3.For curved work I use 1/8 bending poplar. I cant picture 1/2" melamine bending very well.4.I am not clear about this question, what you mean by laminations. If Im veneering, every layer is perpendicular to the next. If its a bent lamination, like an arched jam with 1/8 laminations, I run them all the same way.5.As far as a source for bendable plywood, I suggest finding what compay supplies the professional cabinet shops in your area with plywood. They will most likely carry it.: 1) I have read at nauseum the replies whether or not a balance veneer is needed. Is it necessary to use one on 3/4+ inch : plywood as well, and does it matter what the grain orientation is?: 2)Can you recommend a inexpensive "all around" veneer & thickness to keep on hand for this purpose for projects where the : non-essential side will not be seen?: 3)Caul thickness? What is a good caul thickness for curved work? Is 1/2" melemine coated particle board ok?: 4)Lamination: When laminating, do all surface grain need to be perpendicular to eachother?: 5)I'm having trouble finding a source for bendable stock, ~1/8", ie. birch etc for laminating purposes....any advice?: Thank You!!!!
