Subject : Qustion about "balance" veneer

I am about to veneer a piece if MDF that is 20" x 28" x 3/4" with elm burl veneer. I have always been told to use the same veneer on the under side of the substrate (as the balancing veneer). Then some one else told me it was ok to use a veneer of the same thickness, but not necessarily the same species. Yet another person said I could get away with using regular "backer sheet" that is typically used to balance laminates.I dont want to waste any of this wonderful veneer by placing it under the substrate (where it will never be seen). But I also dont want to screw up by being cheap and have the top warp (and thereby wasting more veneer).Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Dear Joe,The main thing is to put something on the other side but what you use really depends on what you want out of the panel and how it will be used. If Im making a free swinging inset door with tight gaps all around I want a door that will stay absolutely flat. If Im making a table top that will be screwed down well Im not as concerned about a little warping and am less concerned what goes on the back. In general I use a veneer of similar thickness and density when I want things to stay as flat as possible, otherwise any veneer will do. I rairly put the exact same veneer on the back and dont see any reason for you to do so with your Elm burl.In general I would stay away from plastic laminate backer sheets as they do not have the same "pull" on the substrate after drying that veneer will, which will encourage more warpage than usual. Although I dont think it would create a disaster.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I am about to veneer a piece if MDF that is 20" x 28" x 3/4" with elm burl veneer.
