I am making a table app. 18" x 48" with the grain running the length. I am going to have a 1" border running 90 degrees to the length. The border is macassar ebony. I was wondering if I should run the edgebanding ( also m.e.) the same direction or turn it 90 degrees? Also, I want to make a 2 ply for the top. Does the edgebanding always need to be put on first? Dear Wade,Your question on grain direction is aesthetic so the decision is really personal, I also dontwant style the piece is in which would affect the choice also. If I understand what you are doing I would say you are running a short grain boarder around your table(the grain going the1" way), if this is truly the case, I think the edge banding should be in short grain also. Thiswill give the effect of the macassar ebony going off the table and down the edge banding. As far as putting the edge banding on before or after, again its really your choice. Since youredge banding is veneer, visually you will not see the difference either way. If you are goingto two ply your table you will have to put on the edge banding after pressing the top, otherwiseyou will end up seeing the backer ply if you put the edge banding on first and then press thetop. With a short grain boarder top I especially like to put on my edge banding afterwards, becausegetting the short grain boarder mitres are hard to line up with the exact points of the tabletop. If I press the top first, I can trim it down so the points on the corners of the short grainboarders are perfect and then edge band afterwards. Thats my particular approach.: I am making a table app. 18" x 48" with the grain running the length. : I am going to have a 1" border running 90 degrees to the length. The : border is macassar ebony. I was wondering if I should run the : edgebanding ( also m.e.) the same direction or turn it 90 degrees? : Also, I want to make a 2 ply for the top. Does the edgebanding always : need to be put on first? T.I.A wade : ellis
