I know that veneering both sides of a substrate is advisable but I was experimenting with one sided melamine coated MDF. Would a 1/4" flat panel, melamine one side birdseye maple other side hold up over time? The panel would go in a solid bubinga frame. What are your thoughts?

Dear Bruce,I'm afraid to say that your panel will definately warp. As the glue dries on the veneer side of the panel there is a certain amount shrikage that the other side does not have, making the panel warp. Because this is a panel in a frame maybe the warpage will not bother you, it wont affect the stability of the door. One thought, you may want to use epoxy, it will have very little shrinkage since there is no moisture in epoxy and your panel will stay basically flat. Be aware though that epoxy bleeds through a lot and you will have some extra scrapping and sanding to clean up the surface. Polyurethane might be a substitute as the clean up is a bit easier.: I know that veneering both sides of a substrate is advisable but I : was experimenting with one sided melamine coated MDF.
