Got a little mahogany table that had a leather-inlayed top. I'm replacing the leather with mahogany crotch. The leather was glued to 3/8" poplar plywood, and the plywood needs replacing. Why is poplar so good? I can seem to find any poplar plywood, and was going to substitute with birch. Think this would be OK using urea formaldehyde? Otherwise, was thinking of using poplar crossbanding. If so, apply it 90 degrees to the plywood?

It's not necessarily that poplar is better than other woods, just that it is one of the cheaper and more plentiful hardwoods. Birch plywood ought to be fine for what you are doing.: Got a little mahogany table that had a leather-inlayed top. I'm : replacing the leather with mahogany crotch.
