Dear Wally,I have heard people trying to veneer a lot of things but veneering sash is a first.I dont think you could get me to do this one, but if you really want to, here is my recommendations.First, I would only do it with Unibond or epoxy as the other methods you mentioned will not hold up to the sunlight, moisture, and heat.Second, Although a vacuum press will veneer the flat surface as well as the bevel in one operation you will need to lightly wet the face of the veneer to get it over the 45 degree angle without cracking. The big problem with vacuum pressing is where one piece of sash meets the next as the bag will not tuck into the corner very well. You may find a reverse cut block that matching the detail will work better just clamping it. I think in the end you may find the whole process not worth the effort, but that one's up to you.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Has anyone tried this one? I've made custom oak mouldings for the : windows in my 50 yr old house and would like to veneer the window sash: with either oak or ash and then stain and finish everything to : match. The windows are double hung wood windows and have been : varnished two or three times over the years - moisture and sun have : taken their toll! The window's are in very sound structural shape, : they just look terrible. So, I've decided to renovate instead of : replace them. : I've stripped off the old finish and have routed off, using a 45 : degree chamfer bit, the fluting that is typically found on the edge : of window sash between the face surface of the sash and the edge that : meets the glass. The glass has been removed. My plan is to wrap : veneer over the face of the sash and then over two 45 degree : surfaces, (one about 3/4" wide and the other about 1/2" wide), the : 1/2" surface butts up to the glass. I will probably use a white : stain together with Minwax's Helmsman finish as protection over the : veneer and surrounding mouldings.: My questions are: 1.) Is Unibond 800 the best glue to use, given the : obvious exposure to sunlight and humidity/sweating that the sash will: experience? 2.) Is vacuum bagging/Unibond 800 the best way to go : here, or would contact cement, iron on or 3M's press and stick veneer: be better? I'm concerned about delamination over time due to exposure: to sunlight and moisture. 3.) Will vacuum bagging provide a good means: of holding the veneer to the two 45 degree surfaces? I've never used: this technique, so I am a rookie here. finally, 4.) Would either oak : or ash be any better than the other in this application?: Any help/hints/ideas from anyone is greatly appreciated, as : my "anality" with this project is in obvious need of all the help it : can get! Thank you. WallyB
