Subject : Holes in Burls

I'm new to veneering, trying a few simple projects. The local woodworking store has some burl veneers (walnut, mostly). There are holes/missing pieces in most of the burls (Are these holes called "checks"?) How would I fill in the holes? They're also very wavy. Is this what to expect with burl veneers? Thanks.

Dear GJ,If the hole are quite small you can fill with a matching putty. If they are too big for that you can purchase a veneer punch which allows you to punch out a hole around defect area and place a plug into that hole from another area in the veneer. Some veneers, especially burls can be a bit uneven. If its not too much you can just work with it as is. If its too much you can use a flattener on it .SincerelyDarryl Keil: I'm new to veneering, trying a few simple projects. The local : woodworking store has some burl veneers (walnut, mostly).
