Paul,You will be fine with the two layers of 3/8" bending ply. Yes, put the cross band veneer in the center and also put a cross band veneer on both the front and back of the door underneath the face veneer. You will find that bending ply facets slightly when its curved and this will show to some extent through your face veneer. A cross banding veneer will eliminate that. The way I handle this is to veneer the face veneer to the cross band veneer in a separate pressing. Once this is done I double sticky tape this "two ply" lay up to my bench and sand it. This way, when its glued to the door the sanding is all done except for a little touch up. Sanding veneer on a curve is a real drag, this method takes care of that difficulty.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Hi,: I'm about to start a base cabinet project requiring a curved front. : It will consist of four doors approximately 21" wide by 30" high. : The overall cabinet will have a gentle curve approx. 10" max : departure in the center. I am planning to use 2 layers of 3/8" : bending ply sandwiched between face veneers and a center veneer. I : will be using Unibond. My questions: 1) Do you think the doors will : be rigid enough, or should I use 6 layers of 1/8" bending poplar? 2) : Do I need the center veneer or is it not necessary?: Thanks for the help,: Paul B.
