Should mdf be sealed prior to gluing veneer with Unibond 800? General practice with contact cements say yes, and recent loose veneers have made me question all aspects. If I should seal, then what's best to use? And most importantly, how do I assure an even coat that won't telegraph through the veneer?

Jeff,You do not need to seal the MDF prior to gluing. What you do need to do is have enough glue so the MDF doesnt soak it all up leaving nothing for the veneer. You can roll the MDF once, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then roll again lightly.Spread your glue with a foam roller for a very uniform coat. As far as bleed through, (this is what I assume you mean when you say "telegraph"), you are bound to get some, especially on open grain woods. A little bleed through is fine, in fact its good. It lets you know you had enough glue. Bleed through can be scraped and sanded off leaving the veneer clean for the finish.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Should mdf be sealed prior to gluing veneer with Unibond 800? : General practice with contact cements say yes, and recent loose : veneers have made me question all aspects.
