Subject : Cross banding to prevent salt migration in MDF

I have concerns regarding fire retardant salts from MDF migrating (or bleeding) through to the surface of a decorative maple face veneer. Should I consider cross banding underneath the face veneer or is there a more appropriate way of isolating the face veneer from the MDF? I am using UF adhesive. Will this form a suitable barrier without the need for a crossband veneer. Many ThanksAndy

Andy,Its probably a good idea to insulate the face veneer from the fire retardant MDF. Some woods may have a chemical reaction and possibly stain you face veneer. Also UF resin glues catalize with an acid salt and the salt in the MDF will most likely affect the setting of the glue. I remmember one of my customers having trouble with Unibond 800 setting up on fire retardant substrates. You may want to glue the backer veneer to the MDF with yellow glue and then glue your face veneer with the UF resin glue.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I have concerns regarding fire retardant salts from MDF migrating (or : bleeding) through to the surface of a decorative maple face veneer. : Should I consider cross banding underneath the face veneer or is : there a more appropriate way of isolating the face veneer from the : MDF?
