I'm currently designing/building a small hall or occasional table. I plan on veneerig the top with a field of crotch mahogany, a small inlay strip, and a band of satinwood. My question is how to treat the edges. My original thought was solid mahogany with some sort of edge treatment. But I'm concerned about the asthetics of it and also the need to stain the solid banding (the rest of the mahogany used in the table will be stained). This table has a Federal look to it. I've seen several tables where the edges were veneered to match the banding. THat's an option, but I'm not crazy about the square edges on the top. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.Tony

Tony,Well, when it comes to design advice I always proceed cautiously as its all a matter of opinion. With that said I think a short grain vertical border of satinwood veneer would look quite nice or a solid satinwood edging. Even if its only 1/8" thick solid I think satiwood edging of any kind will look better than mahogany against the satinwood short grain border. Thats my opinion. In the end it really your call. As all of us have learned you make some great design decisions and you make some bad ones. Its often those bad ones that teach us the most about what does look good.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I'm currently designing/building a small hall or occasional table.
