Subject : Pressing different thickness veneers at the same time

I ran into a new problem yesterday when I pressed a chessboard with an applied 1/4 inch wide border. The border is thicker than the veneer. The veneer within an inch of the thicker border came out of the press wrinkled. I believe this is due to the fact that the thicker border raised the caul above the level of the board veneer, and it wasn't being pressed flat. How to deal with 2 different thickness veneers being pressed at the same time?

Dear Jim,The solution is to get some soft sheet rubber, either 1/32" or 1/16". Put the rubber between the veneer and your top caul, this will do the job quite nicely. Depending on the glue you use I recommend putting a film of plastic between the rubber and veneer to prevent the glue from adhering to the rubber.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I ran into a new problem yesterday when I pressed a chessboard with : an applied 1/4 inch wide border.
