Subject : Voids in plywood substrate

When cutting run of the mill birch plywood I sometimes find voids in the internal plies. I would like to veneer some 3/8" ply for serving tray bottoms, but waiting for the lumber yard to receive shipment of baltic birch which should be void free. Seems like lots of people use the run of the mill birch plywood which has voids. Don't they telegraph through to the surface after veneering with the tremendous pressure of 22+" of vacuum? Thanks.

Don,I've never found reasonably small voids to be a problem. Make sure that you use a platten of 1/4" or thicker plywood over your veneer. In other words, the order would be: substrate, glue, veneer, plastic sheet, platten. The platten spreads the pressure, minimizing both "outies" and "innies."
