Any advantages/disadvantages of platen of thickness other than 3/4", besides weight? Second, what depth and spacing of grooves is recommended for the platen, and are there situations calling for a different depth and/or spacing? Thanks for your time.

Don,There is nothing wrong with a platen over 3/4", I just recommend not under 3/4".Groove spacing and depth is not that critical. I usually run them about every 10"x 1/8" deep. I dont make them wider than 1/8" so the bag can't get sucked down into the grooves, especially right around the exit hole. There is no reason to make them wider than 1/8" anyway.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Any advantages/disadvantages of platen of thickness other than 3/4", besides weight?
