: I'm building a small hall table. The top is veneered with a mahogany crotch field surrounded by satinwood. What would be a : good finish for this application? The table is decorative. I have used McCloskey's Heirloom varnish in the past, but it is hard : to get (can't get it local). I was wondering about just using a poly finish. I will use Minwax Antique oil on the rest of the : table. I've had good luck with Gerneral Finishes as well ( I think theirs is a wipe on poly that comes thinned and ready to : wipe?). Anyway, I've invested a lot of hours in this and chewed off half my fingernails in anxiety over turning my first legs : and veneering my first top, so I want to use the right finish. Plus, this satinwood is gorgeous stuff and I want to show it off. : (The crotch ain't bad neither!). Thanks for the help. : TonyTony,I have used the General Finishes Arm R Seal wipe on finish with great results. I sanded to 320 and followed the directions on the can. The only thing that I have heard of as a problem with this finish is if you try to spread what's on the cloth to thin it will give you white streaks.Even if you do that you just hit it with 0000 steel wool and apply another coat.I was finishing a jewelry box and on the last coat I created a couple of small runs on the back side. I took a sharp had scraper and lightly removed the run did a final steel wool step and applied a good caot of wax.It probably sounds like I think this is a great product... I do.Any questions, just email me.Les
