No contact cement!!Thanks for the warning on not using contact adhesive. When you don’t have a fancy press, what is one’s best option to apply veneer? I have a large metal horizontal mill in which I could surface some steel plates for platens, and then load with weight. Or I could simply use ½ cold-rolled steel, which I believe I could get flat enough. How much psi would one require using raw veneer, MDF or particleboard substrate, and slightly thinned-out Titebond? Or do you recommend some other glue? Anyone have a source for a good nicely veneered sheet-stock, preferably MDF substrate. I can get Maple, Oak and Cherry at my local Menards, but the quality is not there. Thanks,Emil

Emil,With all your determination to use steel and such may I recommend you bite the bullet and get into a simple vacuum press. You can buy a complete entry level system for around $300 or get a vacuum pump from a salvage supplier and buy just the bag, or even make the bag yourself. Once you have a vacuum press you will be happy you did it. You will be free to use any kind of veneer you want, press flat and curved panels with excellent results. There's a lot of effort in prepairing and working with veneer, do it right, get a press. A vacuum press puts down close to one ton per square foot, and does it very uniformly. Think about what it would take to get that amount of pressure using steel plates and weights.Thats my take.SincerelyDarryl Keil
