: I am hot pressing uneven veneers and have been told that the use of : canvas is recommended. I have had problems in delamination with : uneven veneers.What type of canvas should I use and where can I buy : it.Canvas is used as a filler material if you will. To compensate for the inherent imperfections in veneers, thick n thins and varying thicknesses as well as mixed species lay ups. Since the face of the veneer is not truly flat, the lower areas receives less pressure than the high areas. The canvas or felt compensates by transfering pressure into the valleys. You need to make a sandwich. Your layup would look like this... felt or canvas layer(s) Mylar veneer face glue line core The felt or canvas can be purchased at the local fabric store. Duck cloth is often used. BE SURE that there are no wrinkles on the cloth or else it will leave an impression into the veneer. The mylar layer is used to eliminate the possibility of textile transfer into the veneers. Said another way, the weaving of the fabric itself, can be impressed (embossed) into soft species, naturally, we do not want this. Depending on the characteristics of the veneer, you could place two, or three or more layers of fabric. This is even done when hot press platens have a minor depression to compensate for the irregularity of both the veneer and the platen. Regards, John Ersing Veneer Systems 856-309-5137
