How would you go about veneering this headboard. Figure king size, maybe 60" tall, in macassar ebony. Core material on the headboard and rails?

Can you attach a picture of the headboard? When you say "this headboard" sounds like it is already built, correct?

Small picture, but looks like veneer comes out to the corners and the edges also veneered. Seems like that would be prone to chipping. Structural parts of the core I would want to be solid wood to make strong, lasting mortise and tenon joints but headboard looks to be single surface all the way across making me wonder if there is allowance for seasonal movement. Designers often create furniture that shouldn't be built, without design details my first thought is this is one of those pieces.

Solid wood will have to much movement. I am figuring on making the entire headboard as one large piece of plywood. Bending ply sandwiched with 1/16 mahogany with proper grain orientation will eliminate movement. Probably one large form in a custom large vacuum bag. At the thickness in the photo, everything appears to be maybe 1 1/2- 3/4 max. Whether I can incorporate a bed bolt with the bolt in the rail and nut in the end, we will see. Otherwise I may resort to the inset hook type attachments. The box spring is split east/west so there will be u channel steel from head to foot board resting on bed irons.

Won't the four corner posts be solid wood? My personal opinion I would not bother to build a bed without using bed bolts, which might require -squaring off the footboard posts. Too much expense, weight and size to risk on insets, for me. And I've never heard of running channel lengthwise, especially with two piece foundation. Channel can drop over substantial bed irons and run across the bed.

Would this be for a customer or for yourself?

So how are you going to make the radius corners on the head board, curved in plan view, out of solid? plus the movement issues associated with that? Please elaborate....The mattress is coming out of England, hand made, horse hair...they make the box spring with an east west split.

Are you planning on making the headboard to look just like whats in the picture you sent. Any way to attach a larger pic with better resolution so I can see the detailing better? Hard to give good advise when I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at

From time to time I am asked to make a design I feel does not reflect the strengths and weaknesses of materials and lasting joinery, and politely choose not to submit a proposal. The picture is too small for me to be sure, but this bed design might be one of those that I would not make. That's not to say the design is not good, simply that I do not have confidence that the design is buildable at an affordable cost and that the piece would tolerate normal use for say twenty years.

Its not buildable? or you just don't know how to build it? Because it obviously is buildable since we have a pic of it....

Affordable cost? Affordability is a level that varies from person to person. Just b/c you think it may be to expensive to build you wouldn't?

And tolerate normal use? Sure the top edge is suspect but glued well???

Pete

I was offering my sincere thoughts and experience in response to your initial post. I will not contribute further to this thread.

I was asking for thoughts on the construction, even though I think I have it figured out now. I was not looking for someone to respond with its not buildable, or affordable or it wont last. If I backed away from challenges, I would have been out of business 20 years ago. Sometimes you have to think outside the box and I was hoping this forum might contribute to that thought process.

Now that I see this bed a little better, I get the "picture"....pun intended! Sure, I think layers of bending ply with a backer grade veneer sheet between each will do the job quite nicely. I would put the entire form in the bag for best results. Cap the edges afterwards with 1/16" solid then apply the backer veneer to front and back faces to cover the glue joint of the 1/16" edging. Then it should be ready for final veneering of the ebony. I would probably make an ebony two ply for the edges for a little extra protection rather than a single veneer. Capped with 1/16" ebony would be better protection for the edges but solid that you would resaw is probably pretty hard to get.
