I am not sure if this has been suggested before, so I am going to ask. I know Darryl needs to have control of the easily accessible photos, but on another forum I belong to they have a photobucket site for the forum members to post their project pictures or pics related to ongoing discussions. It would be really nice to see some of the work of people here and I know many do not have a website. It doesnt seem like a lot of work for the moderators on that site since they only had to explain how to access the area and then the members setup their own pics.

Is there a listing of websites of the members here somewhere I am missing?

Brad,

Where is this site with the "photo bucket" and I'll see what it looks like. You do know that you can post pictures with your message here?

The photobucket is pretty much a free site (to a limit) for posting pictures. You can arrange pics, organize them in sub-directories and make up slideshows. The FOG area is broken into shop pics, jigs, discussions and then member photos.

The address is below along with the instructions from the Felder Online Group (FOG) I am involved in. The advantage of this setup is you can quickly find pictures of projects, jigs or whatever else people think others may be interested in. To gain access you need to be a member, so I wouldnt think you need to have the same control for this to be a successful sales tool. The FOG group is a little different than this because there is no link to Felder tools, so maybe it does not work for you.

Posting in the emails works great for a specific discussion, but it is not that easy to find project pics or other pics unless you can figure out the correct search term. I am certain many will share some very inspiring work or handy tools that many will benefit from. I know the FOG members do. Just an idea I thought I would toss out there.

www.photobucket.com

Here are the instructions for posting on the FOG. If you want to take a look I can ask the moderators from the FOG if that would be ok before I send all the log in info.

Go to the photobucket site, www.photobucket.com .... the log on is "xxxxx" and the
password is "xxxxx", it is case sensitive, so capitalize the "F".
Once you are there, click on "Member Photos", then under the photo
uploader box, will be a list of "sub albums", on the right, click
where it says "new sub album title", create one with your name on it
and then click "submit". Once you have the folder, click on it to go
into it, then you can add pictures and creat subfolders in there if
you desire... say maybe one for general shop pictures and then
individual projects.... what ever works for you....

Not all pictures need to be in "Member Photos", use the appropriate heading as needed.
You can also create new folders as needed, please just try to have them make logical sense.

Brad

Someone did ask for a contrarian to chime in on this thread, right?

My preference would be to have pix only when needed for discussion content, and I wouldn't browse a separate photo listing area. Not that I wouldn't be inspired by pictures, but I just don't have the time. Add to that my dial-up modem 50K typical transmission speed, and the tendency of the public to post high-res pictures when low-res would suffice . . .

Just my two cents.

I hope more chime in so Darryl can decide if he wants to look into this anymore. The area is separate, so it does not affect the dial up fans. When I am at home, I am on dial up too. It has not effect on posting in messages. That stays the same.

I wouldn't mind a better picture system than what we have. All I've seen is photobucket links, which I use too. It works, but I'm part of an amazing forum called IAP (International Association of Penturners). Their system is the best I've ever seen. It's not completely different from this one, which is much better than yahoo forums. Woodworkers love pics, no matter what type of woodwork you do. I'd love to be able to see pics in the message area of a post, like they do here:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36497

This is my price list, but it isn't the best that I can do. I just don't have the time to fix it all. Here's another link to show what I'm talking about that's different than the first one:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36438

I don't know this guy, who posted this, but it shows the value of pictures in posts.

I'm no techie, so I don't know if this format will support actual pics within our posts. If it's possible, please tell me how.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, that is a totally different web hosting program and I dont suspect Darryl would be inclined to change at this point. It would be a big deal and will affect access speed for those who do not have high speed.

To all:
Please let me know if you would submit project/shop/gadget shots for a vacupress group photobucket site (or similar site). This will not change anything to how you post in discussions. It is only to augment the site and make it easier for new people to find info. If so, I am willing to set it up and I bet we can get Darryl to add a link within the forum for a direct access when and if you want without changing the access speed. If the number of people is reasonable, I would even do the posting for those who do not want to or dont know how.

Please all respond if you are interested. I know there are lots of lurkers. Dont be shy you never know what you may pick up from discussing ideas.

If nobody is interested, I will shut up (yes, occasionally that happens).

Brad

Hi Brad,
I use photobucket for all of my pics for all 3 of the forums in which I am active. I don't know how you do the group deal, but I'd be interested. Darryl could make a sticky page, to the directions and put a link from there, and/or add another link up top. Here is an example of how I use it:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/BigRob777/kingtulipG.jpg

I wish this format would make it an active link, but you have to copy and paste it in the browser address box. I'm far from being a techie and I don't know how to manage my pics well, but it's simple to use otherwise.

The group deal is not really much different. The moderator explained that they did pay $25 to increase the total storage, but other than that it was the same as a personal one. Instructions would need to be added to the sticky to give people directions and login info, but other than that, it is the same as your own private one. Very very easy. May not work for this group. Not a big deal.

One of the strongest features of this forum in my opinion, after the breadth of members and general willingness to respond to questions, is its brevity and focus. This forum would lose much of its value for me if it became "chatty" with everyone showing pictures of their latest project, or links to pictures of their latest project, and sharing "nice work" replies. My vote is to keep the focus of this forum on tips and help with problems. Sharing encouragement and accomplishments is valuable and has its place, I just hope it's place is not here.
My two cents (and I'm not a curmudgeon).

Don, I can see your point and agree many other forums are very chatty and go off topic. There just does not seem to be a lot of places where one can see "attainable" veneer works. Mags are great, but they post stuff from the elitists. It is pretty clear it is not of much interest, so I will drop this.

I think that we can keep it separate, but as a beginner, pictures would go a long way to help me to understand this process more. Also, one of the biggest benefits of pics is for that one big question, "How did you do that?" I have learned so much about making pens from pictures and that one question.
Just my opinion. I'm a newbie here and I also can't stand those "nice job" space wasters. I just think that we can go into it with the mindset that we avoid that. Another way to handle it is to post links to pics though.
A funny note is that Brad and I are in the same pen turners' forum, where "nice work" is all too common.

I know I haven't said much on this thread as I wanted to see what folks had to say. I am having the webmaster take a look at the options to see whats feasible and reasonable. I wont promise anything in particular but will consider the options and take it from there.

LumberJocks has alot of pictures of peoples work, but very few of them involve veneering. B&B Rare Woods, has a customers gallery that shows some awesome work-http://www.wood-veneers.com/gallery_page.html

I would definitly like to see an area similar to one of those that showcases veneer work. And I think if you have it as a seperate forum, it would not get chatty or detract from the original.

Just my two cents.

It's easy, as long as you set the parameters at the start. Don't leave room for comment, just pics. You can access them, whenever you're making a point, or post it, when you put up new pics. I find pics extremely helpful in my business, but also when I want to learn from a mistake.
