Recently I assembled three 24 piece bookmatched starbursts (18", 30" and 48" diameters) using red gum veneer (because it was only $0.20/sq ft). The two competing woodworking shops just down the street make mainly cabinets, bars and bookcases. To establish a niche, I'd like to build two or three nice looking starburst table tops for the spring art show in our community, but examples of starbursts are hard to find. I would find extremely helpful any pictures of starburst designs that anyone can email to me (gcsec@choice.net). I have only a dial up modem, so condensed .jpg files would be greatly appreciated. Mention of the type(s) of veneer used would be very helpful. The pictures will help me choose some patterns to build for the art show, and will also be very useful to give clients some inspiration. Thanks in advance to all.

As a newbie to veneering, I suspect I'm not the only one who would love to see those pictures either posted here or a link to them.

Here is a link to my first sunburst table. It's our kitchen table.
The border is quilted maple. The center is Santa Domingo Rosewood. The light part that make the star is the sapwood. Legs are cherry.

If you use my design, do I get a kick-back?

When I made this the table I sanded through the maple, and Darryl, told me something really important. We all make mistakes. The difference between an amateur and a pro is how well we fix it. Thanks for your support Darryl.

Hey Carl, if you don't mind could you give me the details of that table top? I am a newb, especially to veneer. What substrate did you use, and my main question is about the sides of the table, are they veneer or hardwood joined to your substrate.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

I basically followed the procedure described by Frank Pollaro in two issues of Fine Woodworking. One was on the radial bookmatching. The other was how to do the cross-banding.

The radial bookmatch was first glued to a baltic birch substrate. Then a trammel center is temporarily mounted. It is merely a board with a nail popping out of the center. This is temporary held to the table top with two-sided sticky taped exactly on center of the starburst. This provides a centerpoint to which a router can be rotated around the table top. A bottom cleaning router bit then cuts a perfect radius one veneer thickness deep.

Next a similar trammel setup is used to cut out sectors from a bootmatched veneer layup. These tuples are then glued one at a time to the table top.

After the entire top is covered with the crossbanding, the trammel is used to make the top a perfect circle, and a small groove is cut for the 1/16 band of pseudo ebony between the rosewood and the maple.

It is really easier than it sounds.

After that side of the top is edge banded.

Wow, thanks for the descriptions, Franks furniture is out of this world. Do you happen to have the issue #'s you are reffering to?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

I looked at my hardcopies. I did find the crossbanding article which is in FWW #127 (Dec 1997). I could not find the other article on how to do a radial bookmatch.

I checked Taunton's website, and it was not much help. It has to be there somewhere. And where is my hardcopy???!!!! Dammit, too much junk in this house.

Carl

for you guy's looking for examples of radial match top i have hundreds of examples, from crotch mahogany to walnut burl. if someone would be kind enough to tell me how to put them on my idisk for all to see i will, i'm still computer illitirate. we also produce a 10 piece 1/4 inch plexiglass template set for making radial match table tops. 24 inches long . these will produce a 48 inch max table top flawlessly every time.

Here's a radial match that I did with the same templates that you mention, but I bought them from Schurch....

I'm going to make a plastic template this weekend for my first 12 way radial match. I vaguely recall reading that the template should be slightly oversized so that you can make each 1/2 of the circle, shoot the edges straight, then join them. Are your templates oversized or are they dead on? If oversized, by how much?

Thanks.

My templates are dead on.

What I do, is just make a pencil mark slightly proud of the template, and then use a straight edge to do the cutting, not the template.

Then square the halves, like you mentioned.

The pencil mark is not proud by much - 1/8" or less is what I do.

D Kelly:
You can order templates from Paul Schurch at his website www.schurchwoodwork.com. If you want to contact Craig you'll have to try to email him directly. Click on his name to see if email access pops up. Don

a full 11 piece set in 1/4 inch lexan would be $150.00. 1/8 inch plexi glass would be $100.00. each set is 24 inches long, actually a little loger ,but made to produce a 48 inch round or 24 inch demi lune table top. these dimesions would be the largest of course.
