Subject : bendable dark plywood?

Hi All, I am interested in making some bent laminations and I usually use 1/8th inch bending poplar. Because the curves are long, dramatic, and thin, it is not possible to edge band with veneer and cover up the plywood. Is there a substitute for the bendy ply that I could use that would be dark? like mahogany color or walnut color?

thanks,
Leah

what is your finished thickness, overall size, radius of the curve, and number of pieces?
You may be able to purchase 1/16" or 1/8" walnut at certainly wood, and make your own ply wood.

Hi Mike,

My laminations will be somewhere around 15-20 inches long, ideally about 1/4 inch thick and they are "S" curved with a 6-7 inch radius. I have used 1/16 inch walnut in the past and that worked well. I was hoping there was something cheaper and more flexible (like the 1/8th inch bending poplar) that would also be dark along the edge, but I think that is wishful thinking.

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some wonderful material out there that I hadn't heard of.

thanks,
Leah

nothing I am aware of, but maybe someone will pipe in.
Depending on your finishing schedule, what about sealing the faces & hand brush black ngr on the edges, not that I have tried it my self?

The only other bendable product I'm aware of is the 1/4 & 3/8" luan plywood. It is somewhat dark, at least darker that the bendable poplar. The cross band sheet in the middle is a bit lighter though. Stain it, maybe?

Thanks, those are good ideas. I'll look into the luan.

Mike, what is the ngr? I'm assuming its a stain/dye?

non grain raising stain. but now that i think about it a regular oil type stain might be easier. Talk to your favorite finishing adviser.
Above you have to try a sample probably on a flat piece first & do a complete finish schedule.

1/16 phenolic. Edge is naturally black.

Cool, I'm not familiar with phenolic. Is this something I would order online?

Phenolic can be found at your local laminate supply house. It's nothing more than plastic laminate without the film facing. Basically raw laminate. Works well with both urea and pva glues.

It also come with real wood veneer applied to it if you decide to go that way. It also comes in vertical grade 1/32nd as well as standard 1/16th grade.

Basically you will be asking your supplier for raw plastic laminate.

You could also do your lay ups with the center core being black dyed costello and of course the faces whatever species you intend to use.
