I have some old fairly thick satinwood crotch that i need to flatten. I have tried the glycerin, water, alcohol, glue mixture and it just doesnt soak in enough to flex it into flat. Yes i have soaked it for a while. Any ideas? I am going to try a pot of boiling water to loosen it up. Any other ideas?

Hopefully someone can jump in for you. You might add an approximate thickness of the veneer as that might influence the advice.

Its probably right around 1/16 or so. I ended up taking a few scraps and steaming them- basically just holing it over a pot of boiling water. It helped a little. I ended up taking the veneer and just submerging it in very hot water with the glue, glycerin, alcohol mixture. It made it supple enough to press flat by hand prior to any bag pressing. Now I just have to suck all the water out now. I have time before I need to use it on a project, maybe 6 to 7 weeks plus. I need to inlay a fairly large piece into a chair splat with no string inlay to hide the joint. I am thinking I may 2 ply first. Any thoughts on a backer material for crotch satinwood? It will be inlaid into a mahogany splat so i may just use that.

Pete,

I have great success with gf-20 from veneer systems. if this crotch is as cantankerous as you say it is disregard the instruction on the gf-20 and do not dilute it . use it full strength. if it doesn't perform I'll be amazed.

This stuff can flatten anything. 1/16th inch stuff is no problem.

that said... your are the second person I've heard of to have this infamous satinwood crotch. is it Ceylon satinwood? if so I'm green with envy.
As a matter of fact don't even bother wasting your valuable time dealing with this horrible wood you should just send it to me. LOL

Pete:
**** nice of Craig to offer to take that cantankerous oinery old satinwood crotch off your hands . . .
Not sure if 2 ply will make much of a difference given the thickness of the satinwood.
Don't forget to dry out the crotch before mold and other nasties set in.
Hope it works out.

Yeah the satinwood is the real deal- Havent used that gf 20 yet. Does it keep it pliable or any easier to work? I need to inlay a fairly large piece on a chair splat and thought of making it 2 ply just to keep it from breaking/splitting/cracking. I have gotten a few extra "test" pieces flat by adding hot water into the glue, glycerin mixture. Changed the newspaper out a bunch of times over the weekend and seemed to get it fairly dry. I would like to try and figure out a way to get more air around it to dry it out but still keep pressure on it to stay flat. The newspaper thing is a pain. I started experimenting sawing some crotch maple veneer. I had a tree taken down so I figured I might as well try. The tree guy who happens to live across the street, through the woods, is dropping off some crotch birch soon for me to mess around with. I landed this chair job b/c I have some crotch satinwood so I am trying to get my hands on more unique wood. ANybody have any experience making your own veneer, particularly drying?

For what it is worth, I use paper towels instead of newspapers. They can be reused; just let them dry out in the open for a while after each use.

If you dont mind, I would love to know where you found Satinwood Crotch? I have been looking for this elusive veneer for over 15 years constantly contacting every supplier I can find and have never been able to find it. Same goes for birch crotch. The closest I could find but rare is avodire crotch. HOW DID YOU FIND IT????? You are better than me.

I guess Pete does not want to disclose his source and I dont blame him at all. If I had a source for Satinwood crotch I would probably keep it under wraps also. So this leads me to a seperate question. Does anyone know of a source for any of the following veneers:

Satinwood crotch
Avodire crotch
Birch crotch.

I build Federal furniture for my own use only and can not find these veneers. I have looked for over 15 years. I have only found some Avodire crotch but it is not great and rare.

The suppliers I deal with only sell in volume . 1000 sqft and up. try this company in Canada.

The last time I heard of satinwood crotch being offered for sale was when Frank Pollaro owned flamingo veneer. He apparently found a flitch in an abandon warehouse in France.

P:s don't feel so bad about Pete no disclosing his secrets, he apparently does not want to send me the veneer either.

I havent checked in to the site in some time.... My source? Well, I have a friend who sort of took over an old business restoring/repairing furniture. he shifted the business to more cab/builtins and doesnt have a use for this veneer. I have bought the remaining piles/scraps. It is not in the best of shape and are not really large pieces or many left in the flitchs. But there is enough for a few pieces of furniture. I as well have been looking/asking for birch/satinwood crotch with no luck. I have messed around sawing my own veneer and feel i can do it, I just need the material.

Thanks Craig and Pete, I hear the same thing from people time and time again about needing birch crotch wood. Lots of people have resorted to sawing their own. I tried but it didnt come out so good on my crappy bandsaw and the material was not the best.

this leads me to the question as to why suppliers dont saw birch crotch? I dont think that it is that rare. I see it a lot in solid wood especially as bowl blanks for woodturners. Anybody know?

I haven't tried ckurak's method of paper towels, but have found blotting paper, which is available in quite large sizes to be 3 to 4 times as effective as newspaper for drying out. 2 presses normally sufficient, and can be re-used after drying out although effectiveness drops off.
