Good day all. I work on a yacht that is 25yrs old, built in Holland(beautiful veneering)& I'm trying to get "edumacated" as to the veneering/interior finish carpentry to represent the boss a little more responsibly during the process. We are planning a refit on the old girl & one of the issues is interior upgrades with numerous items. One being carpentry/veneering for an A/V upgrade. We have a cabinet roughly (10'L x 2 1/2'D x 31"T) See pics please. Here is the deal. It pretty much unbolts, so it can be made offsite once particulars are worked out. I'm trying to source this veneer w/out having to go back to Holland( in a perfect world) Also, we are looking to alter or build new this entire cavbinet as to accomodate a 47"LCD that rises on a lift, plus all of the components that would go w/ an entertainment system for this area. I know this is a pretty vague description, but what would a ball park figure be for something like this? You would not believe the qoute I received. Or maybe you would, I don't know. Thanks for looking & an update, I can't post anything on here because my files are larger than 50 kb. Thanks again for any curse words or words of advice. -Noel-

Perhaps if you go to your photo editor and then go to help and look up "resizing" it will tell you how to reduce size of the finished image. Try 400 pixels wide, save it and look at the file size. If it is less than 50K you might be able to post it. I would love to see this old boat.

Hope this helps alleviate your frustration.

Dave

Thanks for the suggestion Dave. I've converted the photos once down to what they are now, which I've never had a problem with until now, but for sure will try your suggestion. -Noel-

From the first two pictures I'm pretty sure it is bookmatched curly anigre. Anigre is not top dollar and is available in wide pieces. I bought about 20 sheets in sequence (20"x35" from these guys:

I would send the pictures to "Certainly Wood" one of the best veneer houses in the USA, and ask them what it is and how much per sq. ft. I have no idea about cost make something like this, except I'd bet the farm it will be very spendy.

In my custom fabrication business I make it a rule to not give "ballpark" quotes and I suspect that most of the best shops follow suit. The problem is, the project is usually very vague and undefined. The ballpark becomes a wild guess that serves no one. However I do give estimates to those who make a serious effort to visit me and describe their project to me as I suspect others do also. In any case, while I am on the west coast, I'm way too far north for you. But there are a lot of custom shops in the southern Calif. area. You could visit the web site of the Furniture Society (www.furnituresociety.org) and browse the gallery there. Makers are grouped according to geographical area. Look at some work and pick a few guys to call. I'm sure you can find someone interested in working on a yacht. I'd love to but you'd have to sail north to Alaska.

We agree with Jeff Patrick as we specialize in this type of project. It is a lot of work and takes a lot of time. Find someone close that you feel comfortable with and check progress often. We would have you show us what you want and get everything down on paper tell you to leave your check book and we'll call you when it's done. Sounds harsh but boat projects are like that.
