I just glued up a table top, and the veneer tape left a definite impression in the maple burl veneer. I ended up steaming and sanding it, and got it to the point where only someone who knows that it's there will notice it, but did I do something wrong to make this happen?

Paula,
I'm surprised that the tape compressed maple. What kind of caul were you using? Something very hard?
When I have a potentially troublesome glue up, I often lay a sheet of 1/16" rubber over the plastic release layer. Then any caul will work. You might also try a fir or pine plywood for the caul. I'm assuming that the caul was harder than the veneer and/or the substrate.
Good luck,
Tom

I used an 1/8" sheet of melamine-coated fiberboard for a caul. I pressed this piece in a vacuum bag.

Is there anything I can do after the fact to fix it? I just put on my first coat of finish, and you can see the impression from the tape again as plain as day.

Honestly, I think that you're stuck, Paula.

Your adhesive is not going to move, and it's probably soaked pretty good into your veneer...not allowing it to moisten with steam.

Did you use solid gum tape, or the perforated?

If you used the solid, the only advise that I have it to take some sandpaper, and try to smooth the transitions by hand. Just use a tiny piece of sandpaper, and get rid of the ridge....just round it over enough to hide it from the eye.

Dunno if this will work, but it's all I can think of.

good luck...

I used the perforated tape.

Have you ever had this happen to you?

This is my first real veneer project. I did lots and lots of samples before this, and didn't have this problem. Now I'm afraid to do another veneer until I figure out how to keep this from happening again.

I use the non-perforated, and have never had this problem that you mention.

I agree with what Thomas said above about the hardness of your caul. Maybe your maple veneer is soft maple.

Paul Schurch taught me to lay some canvas down over the marquetry side of a piece, and I've always done just that without problems.

Also, check where you're pump is set. You might have it set for much more power than you really need.

I think that your only solution is to start sanding to even it out, and pray that you've got enough thickness to hide it without sanding through to your substrate.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I'll try sanding and see what that does.

Paula, Sand your panel more. I beltsand cross and with the grain before using my dynabrade going from 120-220. I almost never have a sand through. Vibrator sanders are the worst to sand with, the pad is soft and will take off the edges before you know it.

Thanks. I was really worried about sanding through, and spooked because I've been reading and studying a lot to get ready for this project and have never seen a reference to anyone having problems with tape lines. But I bit the bullet and sanded (although I chickened out and sanded by hand), and now it looks fine.

By the way, I tried to duplicate the problem so I could try sanding on a test piece. I used the same veneer (from the same lot), the same substrate, glue, cauls, tape pattern, left the veneer in the press for the same amount of time, and left the tape on for the same amount of time afterward, and no tape lines. I'm baffled.
