Subject : Laminating Cocobolo to Baltic Birch??

I have 6 pieces of Cocobolo, they are 14" x 70" x 1/4", they are all slightly cupped along the length of each piece.. I have had them for years and finally have a project that I would like to use some of them on, specifically to make two doors for a cabinet, each door would be 24" x 30". I have a vacuum press and bag that I have used for veneering for a few projects with success but that was typical store bought sliced veneer. I am not sure of the best method to use these panels since they are 1/4" thick. I have considered laminating the Cocobolo onto one side of. 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood with a backer of veneer on the other side, laminating both sides of 1/2" Baltic Birch or maybe the 1/4" Baltic Birch with the Cocobolo. I have read all the posts I can find but have not found any discussions using 1/4" thick panels. Any thoughts on a good option, I really don't want to do a frame and panel door.

Thanks,

Bill

I would go with 1/2" Baltic and balance the backside with 1/4" boards. I made doors this way once with an mdf core and haven't been notified of any issues. Just make sure the Baltic is not warped or twisted.

Thanks Aaron, I am thinking your suggestion is what I will do, probably just use the Cocobolo on both sides and glue up with Unibond 800 type glue.

Bill

If you use your cocobolo for both sides, I would make the cupping opposite on the back side, so the two face pieces are in opposition. Keep in mind that veneer more than 1/8" thick starts to act like solid wood, even when glued with a rigid glue to a sheet good core.

I think you have several issues here to deal with.
1/4" wood is not veneer & I don't think a vacuum press would pull it flat.
Although I agree with Don about reversing the cups front back.
I would be inclined to thickness it to as thin as you can, at least 1/8"
for example. Although thicknessing itself may not be possible. Jointing first with sharp knives would make it easier. Try putting a piece of your stock in the bag by itself & see how easily it pulls it down In my experience BB is not very flat but a 24 x 30 door may be OK. Depending on what kind of hinging you go with I would go with thicker plywood.
Lastly scuff your coco with coarse paper just before you glue it. The only problems with gluing these type of woods occur when the surface has oxidized over 24 hours.

Mike and Don,

Thanks for all the tips and ideas. I haven't cut the Cocobolo yet, once its cut first priority is testing to see if the bag will pull it flat, if not I can use clamps and cauls I guess. I may try jointing the bottom to take away some of the cup.

When you talk about reversing the cup front and back do you mean.... Cupped Cocobolo = ( or ). The core is |.

A. ( | )

B. ) | (

C. ( | (

Thanks

First door is out of the press, 1/4 in thick Cocobolo on both sides of 12mm Baltic birch. I sanded the Cocobolo on the glue side with 60grit, wiped with acetone, used Unibond 800, left each side in press for 24 hours. 24 hours was only because I only had time to do one side per day and needed the mid day warmth in the garage, I did use an electric blanket on the press and left it on for 12 -18 hours. The press pulled down the cupped Cocobolo just fine and the completed door is flat. Thank to all for your suggestions.

Bill

Great to hear of your success. Cocobolo can be a difficult veneer to glue down. The extra temperature you gained by using the electric blanket really helps the glue to penetrate oily woods like Cocobolo.

All the doors are done and I have laid up 3 panels, two are done, one is in the press now. They have commercial Cocobolo 1/42" thick. I wiped with acetone before using the Unibond 800 and they look solid. Even though it warmed up quite a bit I am still using the heating blanket. So far so good and I am happy to not have to use epoxy!
