I purchased some of this a while back. I've used it before with much success. This time, when I mixed it up, the result was more like putty. It wouldn't roll on the substrate at all. I gave up and used a PVA glue instead. Today when I went to the shop, I found the Pro-Glue in the container I mixed it in, still in a putty-like state. Anyone else ever had this problem, and what it wrong?

How long have had it? Possibly the shelf life is up.

I'm not sure how long I've had it and you could be right. It was sealed up, however.

Probably any powder that is to be mixed with water can absorb humidity from the air and go bad with time. Some products also keep best at certain temperatures, such as keeping shellac flakes in a fridge.

Might be worth considering a test of any product more than a year old before using on a project.

This is probably the answer to my plight. I'm glad I only purchased the 6 oz tub when I bought it.

Fortunately, I didn't mess up the project. If you guys use this, do you size the substrate first with PVA glue before applying the Pro-Glue?

In general sizing is not necessary but some ultralight MDF's can be a bit over absorbent and sizing can be a good idea. Be aware that all urea resin glues have limited shelf life even if you keep the container sealed. Cold storage helps the shelf life considerable, like a fridge or freezer.

Thanks Darrel! That's probably my problem. I'll go to the website and buy some more. I got this at a local woodworking store. It might have been old when I bought it. I don't see any date code on the tub.

At his workshop a number of years ago, Paul Schurch said a bit of PVA could be added to the mixed ProGlue if it was showing fisheyes on the substrate. I've never heard of sizing MDF or baltic birch before rolling out plastic resin glue. At Paul's suggestion, I do lightly scuff sand the entire surface of the substrate with 80 grit on a hard backer, to remove any high spots and give the glue a better grip on the substrate.

Strangely enough, I got the idea of sizing from a Paul Schurch DVD I watched at a friend's house. I've used Pro-Glue in the past without sizing but the idea of scuffing the surface does make sense. Thanks.

My apologies for an incomplete earlier response. I do size the cut edges of MDF by brushing on a coat of plastic resin, waiting 5-10 min when it looks absorbed, then applying second coat and the material being attached.
