Hi all,
Have been commission to make an oval chest of drawer ( see Veneering_info.pdf).
Wondering if any one of you guys have tackle similar projects (oval chest ) and would share his veneering approach.
I need to veneer this in red alder and I’m thinking using a vacuum press bag system.

Any experience & suggestion would be much appreciated.

Robert,

An oval chest of drawers is no easy task and a decent explanation would take pages.

Suggestions? Get yourself a vacuum press, (I wouldnt even consider a project like this without one), some 1/8" Italian bending poplar, 3/8" bending plywood, a slow setting rigid glue, and you'll have the basic ingredients to get you going.

Darryl,

Thanks and sorry for this slow reply….needed time as I needed to play your videos a few times !! ;o)
Have the vacuum press for some yrs now, few 3/8 bendable ply, the veneer, keep in stock rigid reactive glue…etc…
Just missing inspiration on how to tackle the making of this !?!.... Once I’ll finish this ( must be done by end of august), I’ll post some pics.

In the name of many, Thanks you Darryl for your many contribution, tips and ongoing support !
Amicalement, Robert ;o)

Darryl,
Another question before I start this project !

in regards to this project, I’m wondering if I should venture in making my own paper back with craft paper or go by one of your recommendation of applying another veneer as a backer ??

If paper back, I have some craft paper on hand, how to glue it or better yet, where can one find info about this procedure & proper paper weight selection & prep ?
Witch glue….so on !!
Thanks, Robert ;o)

I am currently working on an oval chairside table. It has really been a challenge. To me the hardest part has been joining the 2 sides together.
First I drew the oval shape and size I wanted and cut it out and faired it. Then I built a bending form that would create a little over 1/3 of the sides and I pressed 2 of 6 layers of Italian poplar. This gave me the sides. When I butted the 2 together, that left a little less than 1/3 of the circumferance(sp?)as the opening for the drawers. I did a 2 ply of the Koa veneer I wanted to use. Then I sanded these and used the same form to veneer them over the sides.I built a second form to create the drawer fronts. This completed the full oval.
The top and bottoms have solid edging around 2 layers of 1/2 Baltic Birch Plywood with a starburst pattern on the top.
As I said, joining the parts has been a struggle. I finally built and interior frame using 3 oval shaped pieces of 3/4 BB that matched the interior of the oval sides. They are separated, glued and screwed,by dividers equal to the height of each drawer space. Careful alignment was essential so that the sides of these interior oval touched the insides of the side pieces, thereby binding it all together. Then, the top and bottom were doweled to the sides.
Does this make any sense? I'm not techno-savy so I can't post pictures, but I'll try to answer a question. It has worked out pretty well.

Kelly,
I thank you very much for taking time & patience to explain your experience doing your oval chest.
Not to worry, your story make sense !
My approach is similar, although doing the oval chest in one 2/3 oval bending form that becomes the core carcass for the chest and drawer support. Will try Darrell’s approach by using an inner “support bag form” . Never tried this, hope it works 1st time !!??
Then using another bending form for the drawers.

BTW….since no reply for my paper back question…. I’ve resolved it by getting some veneer with paper back done in another shop who sub his hot press. ( need a hot press as the paper backing for veneer is a specialty pre-glued Kraft paper I’ve learned….the hard way ! ), and some other veneer with the traditional veneer ply back !

Well, not over yet, actually only at the concept stage and some material prep. Schedule to start all this mid august. When done, should post some pics for the curius mind.
Later, Robert….
This forum need some wakening…..it seem sleeping !!! ;o)

I thought about the approach you are taking, doing the carcas in one piece. I just didn't have the nerve to try it. Good luck. I hope you can post some pics. I am about 95% complete with my first one. All I have left to do is the Starburst top. I hope I can figure out how to post a picture when I'm finished.
I say "first" because I know I will make several more. There's just too much work in the bending forms and cutting jigs to only make one.

Robert,

They look great! Ovals can be such a challenge and you did three of them. Very nice work.
