Can I do two panels at a time, one on top of the other, with a caul between them? This is the system I will be using:
http://www.veneersupplies.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_64&products_id=2299

BTW, it's all I could afford at the time I purchased it.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

As long as you have enough time to spread the glue on both panels you can easily press two panels on top of each other, you could do even more.

Thanks Darryl. It's going to be my first use of unibond (and only my 2nd use of my press). I'm probably going to have to buy more of your foam rollers soon.

I bought some veneering tape, that seems to be way too sticky ("special" masking tape type). It pulls up wood fragments (waterfall bubinga). Is this going to continue, once the veneer is glued to a substrate? I have (since joining this forum) changed my supplier to VP and am glad I did.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

Any brand of masking tape is not veneer tape. Masking tape has at least two problems. The one you mentioned where it pulls the fibers up on certain woods when you try to remove it. Second, its thickness will leave a slight indentation in the veneer which you will have to sand further to get out.

I only use it to temporarily hold the veneer until I put real veneer tape on the other side. True veneer tape that you wet to apply will never leave an indentation in the veneer as it is so thin. Because you re-wet it to remove it there is never any pulling of the veneer fibers. The one thing you have to do with veneer tape is remove the glue residue from the veneer. I generously saturate the scrubby side of a sponge and scrub the veneer. Not only will this remove this glue residue but the water on the surface of the veneer will "test" the bond by trying to swell the veneer so you'll know if any areas did not glue properly. Better to know right away then months later after your piece is all finished.

Rob:
I use clear packing tape to keep aligned the top veneer, substrate, and bottom or backer vener while they are being slid into the bag. The best results I've had is with 3M heavier grade - it doesn't seem to tear as quickly when I try to remove it.
However, with every brand of packing tape I sometimes found it lifted strands of veneer when I removed it. My solution was to apply 2" wide paper veneer tape around the edges while applying 3/4" wide paper veneer tape to the seams. And I'll keep my strips of packing tape short enough so that they fall within this 2" wide border.
Just my approach, there are others.

Thanks Guys,
I watched Darryl's first DVD again (for the ?th time). I'm a bit peeved that someone would sell that stuff as veneer tape. It's sticker than most other masking tapes too. I have a couple of cases of packing tape to try. It's really thin stuff too.
Thanks again,
Rob

Rob,

Like Don said, clear packaging tape is an option but it can stick excessively as well. You can use a heat gun to make it easier to get off. I still vote for traditional veneer tape as it does one thing no other tape will do and that's shrink as it dries which pulls the joints together that little bit extra and will not relax like other tapes will.

Masking tape should never be sold as veneer tape under any condition. Its one thing to decide to use it yourself but to be sold it as a veneer tape in not OK in my book.

Sorry to confuse everyone. I only use paper veneer tape to bring together seams in veneer. The packing tape I only use to hold together the "sandwich" of bottom veneer sheet/substrate/upper veneer sheet. I don't use packing tape to hold together seams between two pieces of veneer. Hope this clarifies.

Don,

I wasn't confused.

I actually think it is a great idea that I can use.

Thank you!

Charles

I knew what you meant too. I'm going to have to order some veneer tape tomorrow. I can't proceed without it. I'll bet I could make a tape wetter gizmo, with lignum vitae. That would be fun. I haven't turned anything on my lathe in months.
