I decided to complete a small presentation table for our office using some curved panels. I have not completed any curved panels yet.

Q1. I do not have an internal bladder, so I made a form similar to what Darryl has on his DVD. The radius is 18" and the form is approx 12" tall. I have noticed that the bag appears to stretch/bend quite a bit at the ends. Should I build forms at the ends to reduce the stress on the bag? If so, any tips?

Q2. Substrate material. I am in a fairly remote area and bendable plywood is about 2wks away and about $150 per sheet of 3/8". What do others pay for this? For now I am using sheets of 1/8" baltic birch, but it is a bit tedious.

Q3. I watched Darryl's DVD again, and I noticed that he recommends two ply for such work. It makes sense, but my previous attempt with two ply yielded a panel that almost rolled up into a circle since I waited a bit too long to get it back into the press onto the sub. That two ply was a poplar backing with a makore crotch face. This project uses a Bubinga Swirl and either makore or poplar scraps for the backer. Do I need to get it back into the press quickly or will this pairing be easier? All layers will be glued using Unibond.

Thks
Brad

Brad,

I dont think an additional form is needed. your bag should spring back to it's original form with no problem.

When I two ply I usually place the lay up under a board to keep it flat. depending on how rigid the glue made the two ply will determine if you have any problems . I think you should be alright if you wait but that's a decision you'll have to make.

As far as 150 for 3/8 bending ply is concerned. "somethin' ain't right" with that.

Around here it ranges from 27 to 37 per sheet. bendable mdf is about the same. you might want to look online if your that isolated . you'll probably find it much cheaper and get it a lot faster.

thks Craig.

I was hoping the price of bendable ply was out to lunch. I will search for another supplier.

More Q's (can you believe it??)

I ended up pressing some 1/8" sheets for the sub of this project. After using the curved form now I find I have some wrinkles in the vac bag. Makes sense, it stretched. I assume I just get to live with that? Yet, another reason to add a bladder to my setup. Less stretching.

Now I started flattening the Bubinga Swirl with GF20. Its been up in my storage area for about 6mo, and I am embarrassed to admit that its probably a bit too close to a heat register. It was very dry when I started flattening. It was quite wrinkled this am when i changed out the paper. I am hoping that it will be better by the time I get home, but I am not sure. If it is still a bit wrinkled should I try flattneing again or might it get better when I apply the two ply?

I have been having a problem with my vac not wanting to re-start once the vac drops. It will stall sometimes. I know that will burn out the windings on the motor, so I am hoping to fix this. I have set the low pressure start point as low as I can and I am hooked direct to a 15amp plug. The vacuum pump was connected to an extension cord at one time, but it was a 14g cord. I did find the air filter was plugged a while back, and cleaned it. Ideas?

Thanks again.
Brad

Brad,

Your bag should spring back over time. what kind do you have?

As for the gf20 is should make short work of the Bubinga. Did you make sure to coat both sides? If for some reason there are still wrinkles use the gf20 full strength.

As for the press problem I cant offer any help as I usually resort to kicking things when they don't work. That procedure has never produced the desired results.

How long was the extension cord? maybe a 12 gauge would solve the problem( 12 gauge wire I mean, not shotgun).

I'll go give er a kick Well, on second thought maybe I'll give Darryl a call.

I have a 30ml poly bag.

The Bubinga was still wrinkly, so I am trying it again. I sprayed both sides at full strength. I'll see how it works.

Sometimes I'm tempted to use the 12 guage myself (and I don't mean the extension cord). Thanks Craig, I needed a laugh.

Rob, I called and spoke to one of Darryl's guys. Apparently this has happened before. I replaced the capacitor with a 25micro farad cap (orig is 15micro farad) in my 5cfm press, and it works like a charm again. I have probably logged almost 600hrs on the machine, so its all good.

I had to laugh at Craigs reply too. It reminded me of working with my father fixing a truck yrs ago. He said after struggling with something for hours, "I'd kick it, but then I'd hurt my foot."

Whats Rob been up to? The group doesnt seem to active lately?

Brad

I agree that the price you were paying for bending ply is crazy. I don't have a supplier close by for bending materials and have ordered them online. I have purchased Neatform BendyMDF from Rockler. Here is a link to a place I am going to try next time: http://www.aitwood.com. They carry bending luan, mdf, birch and popler. I have heard good things about them.

There is another online source for the bending products from KerfKore but on my last order of EconoKore, the mdf was glued to the backer board poorly and the layers of mdf were seperating from the backer board even before I used them. The place I ordered them from (to remain nameless) didn't even respond to my emails. Kerfkore finally sent me replacements after I complained to them.

Good luck,

Regards,

Dennis
