Hello, this is about weight – weight of the finished product.

I am a happy owner of a Vacu Press set-up that i often use. I am also increasingly using MDF in my cases since I like to do a lot of marquetry.
The problem is that the finished product becomes so heavy that it is hard to handle and move.

I looked at honeycomb material the other day and wondered how it would be to use it with a ¼” or thinner, MDF on each side. The edges can be made from solid wood for fastening hardware etc. Has any one out there gone that route or is it a crazy idea all together?

Stig.

Hi Craig
Got the picture on the net but I am not quite sure what I am looking at.
I think that You are showing me a cross-cut of the board with some MDF as a skin and the honeycomb in the center. Am I right?

Thanks for the tip.

Stig.

hi stig,
yes, your description was correct. the picture i sent you was 1/8 mdf both sides with 3/4 honeycomb inside. we can also supply a rigid foam core or aluminum honeycomb core. i'll send a picture of that as well. we can also supply panels to spec. if you wanted a 24x 96 1 inch thick panel with a poplar perimeter band insert for example. any species of wood or composite ie. particle board mdf ect.... this is particlarlly helpfull say if you were making doors up to 2 inches thick, conference tables. anything where weight is a concern.

Thank You guys.
It so happens that a lady from Vacu Press called me today and informed me that they indeed have honeycomb for sale. This opens up a whole new set of opportunities for me.
I am going to start small and see how it goes. I will also looking in to the light weight MDF. Can You tell me who manufactures the stuff? I will call my lumber yard tomorrow but I doubt that they have it.
Anyway thanks, I’ll stay in touch.

Take Care

Stig.

stig,
medlite is available where ever your local cabinet makers shops do business.home depot and lowes will not have it and i doubt the average lumber yard carries it as well. check with your local cabinet shops to see who there vendors are. as for the honey comb panels we supply pre made panels(honey comb) up to 5x16 with a variety of different skins. aluminum, mdf, plywood, high pressure laminate. i'll try to post a picture.

I've used the medite on a couple projects and noticed that it doesn't machine as clean as regular MDF (especially when drilling things like holes for hinge cups), the shavings and surface has a fuzzed 'paper'look to it. Definately a bit lighter though.
