Subject : paper backed veneer

I never thought I would need to know this, but I'm looking for some large quilted maple veneer and all I can find is paper-backed. This is for the back panels of a china hutch.
Is there any general reason to stay away from paper-backed veneers? Is there an advantage to thier use over unbacked veneer?
Any advice will be appreciated.
