Subject : Voids in Veneer

Greetings:I have some elm burl to press for back panels. Unfortunately the burl has missing pieces around a knot hole creating an iregular shaped void not more than 1/4". How may I keep the appearance of the knot hole yet provide an attractive repair to the veneer? I'm considering laminating to a cherry paperbacked veneer (Cherry matches the project) and allow the cherry to show through. I'm concerned that the Unibond will be tough to clean away to leave the nice wood. I could use West Epoxy & fill the low to level after the panel comes out the bag. Unfortunately this wouldn't allow for staining the cherry backer. Cutting away the knot holes and repairing is also not desireable.Any recommendations?
