Subject : Dealing with split ends?

I just received my first ever shipment of veneer and all the leaves are split in about 12" on one end. This occured on the end that was on the outside of the roll so I'm wonder if this could be classed as shipping damage? Or, could it be a characteristic of Mahogany?
